Day 6 of Kindergarten (morning):
Emma’s teacher pulls my husband aside to tell him that a kid in the class has been sick with a fever. He has been fever free for 24 hours, but still has a cough. The kid is in class and shares a table with Emma. So, the teacher asks how to handle the situation. David and I agree that the teacher should move Emma to a different table today and tomorrow. Then back to her …normal table on Monday. The teacher thinks that is a good suggestion, but she wants to know “if Emma will be ok with that”. David’s response “She will have to be”.
Emma comes home from school today and I talk to her about the situation. I ask her if she understands why she was moved today and how she feels about that. Her response “I got to sit at the purple circle table today!” She was HAPPY to try out a new table and sit by new friends. I am beyond proud of her.
Is it unfair that Emma had to be the one to move today? Possibly. It is all how you look at the situation. Each of us is dealt struggles in this life and we need to find ways to adapt. Look at the positive in the situation, like my daughter did today.
